The crew of The Black Pig spend the next three days in drill space on their way to Tortuga.
Dupree decides to spend the whole journey locked in the bridge fasting on beef jerky and water with his shotgun at the ready. Mara does something similar and decides to stay in the galley for most of the journey, dispensing the crew’s meals through a slot in the door. They are both afraid the girl they found in the box will have another episode and slit their throats.
The rest of the crew don’t share this fear. In fact, Edgar takes it upon himself to teach the girl in the ways of bureaucracy. Pop, after spending the morning breaking in her new husband, decides to spend some time the girl.
She discovers her name is Rho and that all she can remember is living inside a sterile lab for her whole life. She remembers a tutor, Dr. Sanchez, who taught her all the basic skills and who would sneak in contraband material for her. The two bond over friendship bracelets and other girly things.
The night passes uneventfully. Royce spends the morning working on his mourning wood axe. Mara serves food through a slot in the galley, Dupree fasts on beef jerky and water, and Edgar teaches an unwilling Rho about filing and inventory management.
That afternoon, Pop decides to attempt a psychic bond with Rho to share images of Portlandia and hopefully understand her condition. It all goes well at first until a voice inside Pop’s head demands they stop and push the two of them away using psychic energy. Rho is a little shaken up by the experience and asks that they not do that again. They decided to paint each others toe nails instead. Pop notices a small bump on her neck, right below her right ear.
Meanwhile, Edgar discovers the an encrypted datapad belonging to the Old Man while going through his possessions. He decides to give it to the android to see if he can crack the decryption.
Later that evening Pop and Edgar discuss the strange bump on Rho’s neck. Edgar is convinced it’s some kind of tumor, growth, or something really bad. Pop decides to use her omen gift. She focuses on the bump and asks the question if it is a danger to Rho, or anyone, on the ship. The vision she gets is that it’s something cold, unnatural, and tech related but it poses no threat to her or anyone on the ship.
Edgar, Royce, Pop, and her husband, Ryan, are woken up to the sounds of terrified screams. Rho is having a night terror and Edgar advises no one wake her. Pop attempts a psychic bond to pacify her. In her mind she sees a massive storm at sea and intense feelings of rage, isolation, and imprisonment. She is able to calm the storm and stop Rho’s night terrors.
That morning Rho wakes up with no memory of the events of the night. Edgar orders Mara to make pancakes for everyone. After breakfast, he decides to get someone on figuring out how the diagnostic equipment works in the infirmary. Ryan tries but can’t get it to work. The android gets the equipment working, but has no knowledge of human anatomy and biology so it can’t make sense of the readings. They do discover it works to discovery Mara’s rickets but it doesn’t detect anything in Edgar or Rho’s DNA samples.
That afternoon the android finishes decrypting the datapad and uncovers the reason the Old Man was after that ship. Edgar gathers the crew for the crew under the pretence of an inventory management meeting. Ryan is left with Rho in another part of the ship.
The android suggests all the present members undergo a mental will test so Rho might not get the information they are about to review. Everyone but Royce passes and he waits outside. The Old Man’s journal reveals that his job was to intercept the Roebuck, take the girl, then deliver her to someone called The Adviser in Asylum. The reward for the job was enough to cover all the Old Man’s expenses and possibly buy a new ship or a new life.
The crew decide not to sell the girl but instead to seek out a treasure Edgar learned about while in prison on his homeworld. He was told there is a great treasure in a system that “shines like a gem in the sky” and a tune to an unknown song. At first, they think it’s referring to M’ryld but Dupree reminds them that M’ryld is a planet, not a system and that the only system he can think of that shines in the sky is the nebula of Opal system. Even though an opal isn’t a gem, this system has to be the place.
The crew work out a plan to reach the system and the first part is to refuel and resupply at Tortuga. Dupree tells them the ship will enter the Ajax system first thing tomorrow morning. The crew all turn in for the night.
