A Tale of Revenge

Getting to known the crew.

The crew of The Black Pig spend the next three days in drill space on their way to Tortuga.

Day 1

Dupree decides to spend the whole journey locked in the bridge fasting on beef jerky and water with his shotgun at the ready. Mara does something similar and decides to stay in the galley for most of the journey, dispensing the crew’s meals through a slot in the door. They are both afraid the girl they found in the box will have another episode and slit their throats.

The rest of the crew don’t share this fear. In fact, Edgar takes it upon himself to teach the girl in the ways of bureaucracy. Pop, after spending the morning breaking in her new husband, decides to spend some time the girl.

She discovers her name is Rho and that all she can remember is living inside a sterile lab for her whole life. She remembers a tutor, Dr. Sanchez, who taught her all the basic skills and who would sneak in contraband material for her. The two bond over friendship bracelets and other girly things.

Day 2

The night passes uneventfully. Royce spends the morning working on his mourning wood axe. Mara serves food through a slot in the galley, Dupree fasts on beef jerky and water, and Edgar teaches an unwilling Rho about filing and inventory management.

That afternoon, Pop decides to attempt a psychic bond with Rho to share images of Portlandia and hopefully understand her condition. It all goes well at first until a voice inside Pop’s head demands they stop and push the two of them away using psychic energy. Rho is a little shaken up by the experience and asks that they not do that again. They decided to paint each others toe nails instead. Pop notices a small bump on her neck, right below her right ear.

Meanwhile, Edgar discovers the an encrypted datapad belonging to the Old Man while going through his possessions. He decides to give it to the android to see if he can crack the decryption.

Later that evening Pop and Edgar discuss the strange bump on Rho’s neck. Edgar is convinced it’s some kind of tumor, growth, or something really bad. Pop decides to use her omen gift. She focuses on the bump and asks the question if it is a danger to Rho, or anyone, on the ship. The vision she gets is that it’s something cold, unnatural, and tech related but it poses no threat to her or anyone on the ship.

Day 3

Edgar, Royce, Pop, and her husband, Ryan, are woken up to the sounds of terrified screams. Rho is having a night terror and Edgar advises no one wake her. Pop attempts a psychic bond to pacify her. In her mind she sees a massive storm at sea and intense feelings of rage, isolation, and imprisonment. She is able to calm the storm and stop Rho’s night terrors.

That morning Rho wakes up with no memory of the events of the night. Edgar orders Mara to make pancakes for everyone. After breakfast, he decides to get someone on figuring out how the diagnostic equipment works in the infirmary. Ryan tries but can’t get it to work. The android gets the equipment working, but has no knowledge of human anatomy and biology so it can’t make sense of the readings. They do discover it works to discovery Mara’s rickets but it doesn’t detect anything in Edgar or Rho’s DNA samples.

That afternoon the android finishes decrypting the datapad and uncovers the reason the Old Man was after that ship. Edgar gathers the crew for the crew under the pretence of an inventory management meeting. Ryan is left with Rho in another part of the ship.

The android suggests all the present members undergo a mental will test so Rho might not get the information they are about to review. Everyone but Royce passes and he waits outside. The Old Man’s journal reveals that his job was to intercept the Roebuck, take the girl, then deliver her to someone called The Adviser in Asylum. The reward for the job was enough to cover all the Old Man’s expenses and possibly buy a new ship or a new life.

The crew decide not to sell the girl but instead to seek out a treasure Edgar learned about while in prison on his homeworld. He was told there is a great treasure in a system that “shines like a gem in the sky” and a tune to an unknown song. At first, they think it’s referring to M’ryld but Dupree reminds them that M’ryld is a planet, not a system and that the only system he can think of that shines in the sky is the nebula of Opal system. Even though an opal isn’t a gem, this system has to be the place.

The crew work out a plan to reach the system and the first part is to refuel and resupply at Tortuga. Dupree tells them the ship will enter the Ajax system first thing tomorrow morning. The crew all turn in for the night.

A Strange Box

About two hours after lunch on the third day of waiting the target enters the system. It’s a Freelancer class transport named Roebuck. The Old Man orders your ship to break silent running and intercept.

It takes about 6 hours to catch up with the Roebuck. She tries to evade but Dupree keeps the Pig’s nose pointed at the other ship. Edgar disables the ship with just a couple well placed shots after missing several times (to be fair, a Plasma Beam is very different from the gun powder cannons of his home world).

After disabling the Roebuck the Pig uses its boarding tubes to latch onto the ship and cut through the airlock. Royce leads the raid into the ship and is almost shot by one of the ship’s crew. Pop manages to talk the young man down and convinces him to drop his revolver. The Old Man demands he point him to the ship’s manifest, then he and Warren leave for another part of the ship after ordering Edgar and Royce to sweep the ship for additional crew.

Royce and Edgar manage to get lost and head to the engine room instead of the bridge. They double back and are stopped in the corridor to the bridge by the ship’s captain. He fires a warning shot and demands they stay out of the bridge. Edgar is able to talk him down.

Mean while, Pop preaches the gospel of Portlandia and manages to convert the young man and convince him to be her husband. Three quarters of the way through her sermon there’s a gun shot followed by silence from the hold the Old Man and Warren travelled to. She bravely leads her husband in front of her towards the source of the noise.

Pop uses her psychic intuition and has a vision of standing on a dock over a calm, dark ocean. She feels that if she stays on the dock she will be safe, but senses something harmful in the ocean. She proceeds into the cargo hold and finds the bodies of both the Old Man and Warren limp on the deck with their throats slit. She is joined by Royce and Edgar shortly after.

Edgar alerts the rest of the Pig’s crew and Mara joins them on the Roebuck. Dupree remains on the ship at the helm in case they need to make a quick get a way. Pop discovers a strange, open box which Mara identifies as a cryo pod designed for food storage.

The crew hear sobbing from the corner of the hold and discover a girl in the corner, wearing a hospital gown. She looks about 16 and her gown is covered in blood. Pop comforts her and attempts to probe her mind. She discovers she has a second personality, laying dormant and that this personality is highly aggressive and only seems to emerge when she is in danger.

Dupree informs the crew that two patrol boats are on an intercept course and will arrive in less than 24 hours. Edgar interrogates the captain of the ship and discovers he was hired by a stocky, older man, with a powerful build on the planet Asylum. He was offered a lot of money to perform a standard food stuff run from Ramsay to the GIP, no questions asked.

The crew wastes no time loading the Pig up with 40 tons of cryo preserved food stuffs. They disconnect from the Roebuck leaving the captain on his disabled ship with the remaining 60 tons of food. The bodies of the Old Man and Warren are prepared by Pop and her new husband then shot out an airlock. Edgar takes their belongings.

The crew decides to head back to Tortuga to refuel, resupply, and plan their next move. While on course to the outer rim of the system Edgar discovers the Pig’s engineering section and the ship’s chief engineer, a mechanical man. He simply asks that he leave him be and supply him with scrap.

Dupree calculates a perfect drill to the Ajax system and the ship enters drill space. The journey will take 3 days.

The Job

The Old Man seemed very excited about this job. For years he’s been trying to save up enough to buy himself out of the pirate lifestyle and settle down somewhere nice. Based on his reaction, this could very well be the job that let’s him finally retire.

The Black Pig has been hiding in the Alexandra System for three days now. The crew is starting to get restless but the Old Man assures them that their target will be here soon.
